How to do better than just survive December!

Is it just me, or do you also find December overwhelming?

Each year I look forward to December; but as it gets closer, Christmas Day starts to feel like a deadline. The invitations and obligations start to trickle through, then become a torrent. All those people we haven’t seen for 12 months suddenly become key performance targets: I feel compelled to say, “We must catch-up before xmas,” when the New Year would probably be better for everyone.

When we lived in London and knew just a handful of people, the 1 or 2 social and work invitations were so welcome. They were a source of happiness and connection.

Now we’re back in our home country. It feels like the volume is turned up; not so much on the invitations, but very much on the obligations. And I get stressed by obligation.

Not surprisingly, that stress can make me unhappy. Being a fan of Shawn Achor, I subscribe to the idea that happiness leads to success, not the other way around. (Check out his TEDtalk below).

As I’m very motivated to be successful, I’m also motivated to address this seasonal stress and be happy! Fortunately, I have a secret weapon (thanks Shawn!), which I’d love to share with you: 2‑minute daily happiness boosters.

You can boost your productivity and happiness by 30% by applying one of these 2 minute boosters daily for 21 days.

So, give yourself an early Xmas present! Thrive in December!

Choose 1 and do it every day for 21 days. The simplest thing to do is to do it early in the day, so put it in your diary now.

Here are my favourites.

Thank someone at the start of the day.

Be specific as to why you are thanking them. You can call, text, email, Facebook message or write a letter or note.

Think of 3 things that you’re grateful for.

They need to be different every day and can be small or big things.

Think about something you’re looking forward to.

Write down in detail all the things you're looking forward to about it.

By doing one of these you re-wire your brain to scan for happiness in the world. This makes you happier. When you’re happier you’re more productive, not to mention merrier.

I’d love to hear from you. Tell me in the comments which 2 minute booster you’ve picked for December.

As promised, here's Shawn Achor's awesome and very funny TEDtalk, The happy secret to better work.
